Sooks - West African Funk!!

Hi all, I posted the mix earlier, but thought you might like to see some pictures of the records I brought back from West Africa. They’re roughly arranged by country of origin.

Senegal:

All are Bawobab LPs - the bottom right is Une Nuit Au Jandeer, top right is the one with ‘Kelen Ati Len’ - too bad no covers.

Nigeria:

Sonny, Bongos Ikwue, Docteur Nico, Bottom left is Christy Essien, The Apostles, bottom right is compilation of various tracks w/ a Funkees track & Ofege.

Guinea:

Bunch of Bembeya Jazz, bottom left has mostly more Bembeya Jazz tracks, but some others, too, 22 Band is cool.

Benin:

Top left is compilation of Black Santiagos & Poly-Rhytmo tracks, with ‘Hwe Toe Hun’ by Poly-Rhytmo, top right is Poly-Rhytmo w/ Ne Te Faches Pas, bottom left is killer 80s compilation of Albarika 45s, almost everything on this disc is killer, bottom left is Honore Avolonto & Black Santiagos, no cover again.

Others:

Top left is the Burkinabe Amadou Balake, from Ghana, highlife with the City Boys, top right is a Rail band LP from Mail (no cover again), bottom left is JM Tim & Foty from Cameroon w/ ‘Douala by Night’ (no cover), bottom middle is Mamo Lagbema, I think from Togo, bottom right Maurice Sempore, from Burkina (one jerk track, but really noisy).

45:

Top left is Ekambi Brilliant (Nigeria?), middle is Poly-Rhytmo ‘Minsato…’, top left is a great track by Pierre Sandwidi on CVD from Burkina, bottom left is Ohunyo by the Black Dragons (Porto Novo, Benin), bottom middle, ‘Nyo’ by Balla et ses Balladins (Guinea), bottom right is Temeteba Jazz du Mali, ‘Yayoroba’.

45s:

Top left is Matata, top middle is Fela, Shakara, top right is a great Poly-Rhytmo jerk track, bottom left is Poly-Rhytmo again, Mi Kpon.., bottom middle Camayenne Sextet from Guinea, bottom right is another Poly-Rhytmo track.

SOOKS - West African funk!
So I’ve just come back from Africa, specifically West Africa (Senegal, Mali, Burkina Faso, Benin), and while I was mostly touristing, if I had a chance to look for records I would take it, so I’ve come back with some cool stuff. Now, I’m no Frank with the ads on the radio, so temper your expectations a bit, but I think there’s some good stuff here. More good stuff than can fit in one mix, that’s for sure. But this is the start!I had to cut some songs down - that Honore Avolonto track goes on for like 12 minutes, as does the 22 Band, so I mixed out. For this mix I didn’t want to concentrate on any area or style too much, just to play some tracks from all over. There is persistent crackle throughout the mix, sometimes worse than others, sorry about that. I washed all the records (in the bathtub!), but they could probably stand to be washed again! You may hate the Tentemba Jazz track; certainly others have had that reaction, but I find it compelling, so I put it on here. However, I think we can all agree that the last Poly-Rhytmo track is some serious business!
Tracklist:
Funkees - Dancing Time (Nigeria)Apostles - Never Too Late (Nigeria)Honore Avolonto & Black Santiago - Assounon Dje Dokoli (Benin)Orchestre Poly-Rhytmo de Cotonou - Hwe Towe Hun (Benin)Balla et ses Balladins - Nyo (Guinea)Tentemba Jazz du Mali - Yayoroba (Mali)22 Band Kankan - Deny (Guinea)Pierre Sandwidi & L’Orchestre Super Volta - Yamb Ne Y Capitale (Burkina Faso)Orchestre The Black Dragons de Porto-Novo - Ohunyo (Benin)Docteur Nico & Orchestre African Fiesta - Sookie (Nigera)Orchestre Poly-Rhytmo de Cotonou - Wodeka Roe (Benin)

“This is a mix of songs that I have been playing a lot lately; some are from recent purchases, some are from long-time collection staples, and others are from long-time wants. Tracks 12 through 17 are all pachangas, which is a style that has really caught my ear this year, especially when the caballo rhythm is strong, like it is on Al Castellanos’ playful song “Mish Mash Pachanga.” Listen and enjoy!” - REYNALDO
