DJ Mordecai 5 year deep strutter dropped off this killer uptempo BBOY workout. Mordecai comes from Richmond, VA (was originally born in Columbus, OH) and represents the Double Standard Crew.
You can catch his weekly radio show at University of Richmond’s station. Where he co-hosts “In The Groove” with DJ Barnacles, and ”Richmond Soul Stew” with friend Chew La Rock. He got a couple minutes to talk to me about his mix:
D: What inspired you to make this mix?
DJ Mordecai: I love uptempo funk breaks, so I wanted to put out a mix showing what I can do. B-boys & b-girls at jams I went to inspired me as well as other DJ’s. I especially want to thank B-Boy Mercury, Chew La Rock and my man Oxygen…their input was helpful.D: Did you use Records or a Seratobox?
DJ Mordecai: All records (a few are reissues), though I’ve switched to serato since this… I still dig, but I like the advantages of digital DJ’ing.D: How long did it take you to get the records to be able to make this mix?
DJ Mordecai: Years. Some came early on when I started digging and some came later.D: Do you have any particular songs on this mix that you’d like to give some shine to?
DJ Mordecai: A bunch of them are from funny sources… John Travolta, Chicago, ZZ Top… I like when that happens. :P
D: Anything else you’d like the Strut to know?
DJ Mordecai: Just thanks to Raj and EVERYONE on there I’ve met, interacted with, or haven’t. I’m trying to DJ for b-boys more in the future, so hit me up if you can help in that arena…oh, you might also enjoy my weekly radio show (called) “Richmond Soul Stew” … I put it on our site as podcasts… http://doublestandardcrew.com. There are b-boy breaks and such in most episodes.
Look out for more from Mordecai soon. You can find him @
