Sooks - West African Funk!!

Hi all, I posted the mix earlier, but thought you might like to see some pictures of the records I brought back from West Africa. They’re roughly arranged by country of origin.

Senegal:

All are Bawobab LPs - the bottom right is Une Nuit Au Jandeer, top right is the one with ‘Kelen Ati Len’ - too bad no covers.

Nigeria:

Sonny, Bongos Ikwue, Docteur Nico, Bottom left is Christy Essien, The Apostles, bottom right is compilation of various tracks w/ a Funkees track & Ofege.

Guinea:

Bunch of Bembeya Jazz, bottom left has mostly more Bembeya Jazz tracks, but some others, too, 22 Band is cool.

Benin:

Top left is compilation of Black Santiagos & Poly-Rhytmo tracks, with ‘Hwe Toe Hun’ by Poly-Rhytmo, top right is Poly-Rhytmo w/ Ne Te Faches Pas, bottom left is killer 80s compilation of Albarika 45s, almost everything on this disc is killer, bottom left is Honore Avolonto & Black Santiagos, no cover again.

Others:

Top left is the Burkinabe Amadou Balake, from Ghana, highlife with the City Boys, top right is a Rail band LP from Mail (no cover again), bottom left is JM Tim & Foty from Cameroon w/ ‘Douala by Night’ (no cover), bottom middle is Mamo Lagbema, I think from Togo, bottom right Maurice Sempore, from Burkina (one jerk track, but really noisy).

45:

Top left is Ekambi Brilliant (Nigeria?), middle is Poly-Rhytmo ‘Minsato…’, top left is a great track by Pierre Sandwidi on CVD from Burkina, bottom left is Ohunyo by the Black Dragons (Porto Novo, Benin), bottom middle, ‘Nyo’ by Balla et ses Balladins (Guinea), bottom right is Temeteba Jazz du Mali, ‘Yayoroba’.

45s:

Top left is Matata, top middle is Fela, Shakara, top right is a great Poly-Rhytmo jerk track, bottom left is Poly-Rhytmo again, Mi Kpon.., bottom middle Camayenne Sextet from Guinea, bottom right is another Poly-Rhytmo track.

DJ MORDECAI - BOYOING MIX

DJ Mordecai 5 year deep strutter dropped off this killer uptempo BBOY workout. Mordecai comes from Richmond, VA (was originally born in Columbus, OH) and represents the Double Standard Crew.

You can catch his weekly radio show at University of Richmond’s station. Where he co-hosts “In The Groove” with DJ Barnacles, and ”Richmond Soul Stew” with friend Chew La Rock. He got a couple minutes to talk to me about his mix:

D: What inspired you to make this mix?

DJ Mordecai: I love uptempo funk breaks, so I wanted to put out a mix showing what I can do. B-boys & b-girls at jams I went to inspired me as well as other DJ’s. I especially want to thank B-Boy Mercury, Chew La Rock and my man Oxygen…their input was helpful.
D: Did you use Records or a Seratobox?
DJ Mordecai: All records (a few are reissues), though I’ve switched to serato since this… I still dig, but I like the advantages of digital DJ’ing.
D: How long did it take you to get the records to be able to make this mix?
DJ Mordecai: Years. Some came early on when I started digging and some came later.
D: Do you have any particular songs on this mix that you’d like to give some shine to?
DJ Mordecai: A bunch of them are from funny sources… John Travolta, Chicago, ZZ Top… I like when that happens. :P

D: Anything else you’d like the Strut to know?

DJ Mordecai: Just thanks to Raj and EVERYONE on there I’ve met, interacted with, or haven’t. I’m trying to DJ for b-boys more in the future, so hit me up if you can help in that arena…oh, you might also enjoy my weekly radio show (called) “Richmond Soul Stew” … I put it on our site as podcasts… http://doublestandardcrew.com.  There are b-boy breaks and such in most episodes.

Look out for more from Mordecai soon. You can find him @

Jimey is a very humble beatmaker from Cologne, Nordrhein-Westfalen, Germany.

When asked about his hometown he said, “I have to say cologne is dope. Cologne still got some nice record spots and labels like melting pot, upmyalley, kompakt…”He also admits, “I didn’t expect the mix to be acceptable for the strut:)”

When asked about the Genre of this mix he said, “I’m def not too much into classifying genres, but you could add a hipster term like mad hop, or glitch, or wonky to get some attention.”

He also agreed to share with us this EXCLUSIVE TRACK: Jimey - Moonshoes
